The fitness industry started at very early beginnings for me. I remember being ten years old and swiping cards at some of the biggest clubs in Queensland and thinking how different gyms were to everywhere else my Dad took me. I would sit in banks and wonder why everyone was so bored but then when I came to the gym, everyone was smiling and talking about how good their training was going. It always fascinated me, but I never thought much of it after that.

At school I was a footballer, not Australian football, but the real football (soccer if you still haven’t got me yet). I have played soccer since I was three years old and it’s where I thought my life would take me. I was taken in at a Korean soccer academy based at John Paul College where I continued to learn my trade and fill a goalkeeping spot that was vacated at the time. It opened some of the biggest doors I have had in my life. At thirteen I was lucky enough to be selected to go play in England against some of the biggest clubs in the world. At fourteen I did it again the next year and made a good impression. Playing against, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal at fourteen was something truly special for me and getting to train alongside these teams introduced me to some of my heroes at an exceptionally young age. As life does, it throws you a few curveballs here and there. I have never been one for excuses but my lack of height and bad luck with injuries clearly decided for me that football was not going to be how I made a quid as they would eventually tell me over there.

I came back to Australia lost, 15 years old, no idea what I wanted to do and living in the past of faded hopes and dreams. I got taken into a program at John Paul College called ‘Horizons’ which allowed me to play football, study only half the usual amount and study my way into fitness training which my Dad had recommended for me. I would stay an extra year at school to do all this but I had some of the best times in my life. To be completely honest, I really had no interest in fitness training at all before I started the course, but in the first second of my first day I knew I would definitely enjoy it. In my last year at school my careers advisor said to me that I was absolutely kidding myself and that I need to register for a trade. What a motivator this was and it drove me harder than ever and from that moment I had to succeed! I had one condition with my study, Dad couldn’t teach me. I wanted to do this on my own. I think all of us get to the stage where you want to earn your own keep. Mine happened at sixteen, I think my parents wondered what they had done wrong!

After finishing my course I thought I was a bit of a superstar, I got my first shift handed to me as a receptionist doing opens at 5 am. I was working on the other side of town so this meant a 3 am wake up to have the gym open in time. I was always money hungry so not only was I up at 3 in the morning but I was working a bar job till about 11 at night, it was horrific to say the least but taught me so much about hard work and how far it can take you. My first shift I spent cleaning toilets and swiping cards again. Gee thanks Dad, glad I studied! But it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Since then I have done everything by myself just like he had hoped. It is so important to make your own way in life, some day my children will receive the same deal. After saving some money up, I started buying equipment and built up my business Mobile Fitness Queensland. These three words have changed my life completely. The first year I was working seventy hours a week. I was sleep deprived, anti social and moody! But I have absolutely no regrets, it led me to one of the best lifestyles I could possibly have. All the things I dreamed about having as a kid, I earnt myself and it feels incredible. Currently I look back at my first year and I wonder how I could ever do it. I get frustrated these days if I don’t get golf in twice a week or miss the midday movie. Business is a funny thing; you ask any business owner. You get the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows.

Mobile Fitness Queensland is now responsible for some of the best gigs in Queensland and those who know me, know how much I enjoy what I do. We work in an amazing industry and are truly blessed as fitness professionals. I have some of the best trainers working underneath me and the business will continue to stride forward in new directions. Personal Training is just the start; you never know where it will finish.

What are your qualifications?

I studied at Deakin University, Burwood, Vic, completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) and Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).

What did you do before Online Fitness?

After graduating from University in 2002, I went on to teaching, Physical Education, Health Education and Outdoor Education for 5 years at an all girls’ school in Melbourne. Every year I took on new challenges, coaching new sporting teams, organising camps and motivating students to continue enjoying their health and fitness.

Why did you decide to start teaching?

Since my first year of high school I wanted to work in the Health and Fitness industry.  I loved Physical Education and any type of sport as a child and wanted to continue my adult life/career in that area.  My year 7 PE teacher was a role model for me and increased my interest and inspiration in Health and Fitness.  My sister also completed a Human Movement degree and love every minute of it, so I decided to have the best of both worlds and do a dual degree in both areas.

After teaching high school students for 5 years, I needed a new challenge and that’s when I moved into teaching adults.

Why did you choose Online Fitness?

It was actually purely by chance that I came to work with Online Fitness.  My partner is a Brisbane boy and we were living in Melbourne where I was born and raised. He was offered a job opportunity in Brisbane so we decided to make the move. Like I said, I felt I needed a new challenge so instead of looking for high school teaching I was looking for any job in the fitness industry.  That is when I came across Online Fitness.  I was interviewed over the phone and was employed in December before moving up in January.  It was such an exciting time, moving to a new state and moving into a new career.  I have loved every moment at Online Fitness!

What is your role?

I first started as delivering the Cert IV part time class.  I then moved into a full time position delivering the Cert III and IV course.  I now oversee all of cert III correspondence, marking, curriculum etc. I have been involved in the producing and developing of our new online product.  I am also the graphic designer for the company (just something I do in my spare time!).

What do you enjoy most about Online Fitness?

Moving to a new state and job has been the hardest thing I have had to do. Leaving all my family and friends was very daunting but the team at Online Fitness have been outstanding! They have made me feel so welcome and a part of the family.  I would not want to work anywhere else.  I also love the fact that we as a company are making a difference in the Fitness industry, not only enhancing our students’/trainers’ knowledge, but providing highly educated personal trainers for the community.

Jo Bar - Online Fitness Lecturer

I was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in the 1970’s however I do not like the cold and have never taken to skiing.

In 2002 I decided to move to the Gold Coast of Australia in search of new opportunities and a warmer climate.  Having lived in several areas of the Gold Coast I am now very much enjoying living in Palm Beach on the southern end of the coast.

Whilst back in New Zealand I spent the first half of my working life in Government and Banking positions and went to the gym everyday for sanity, eventually I was more a part of the gym furniture than most of the staff.  The instructors at the time kept encouraging me to take classes as I had become the front row gym junkie and their argument was that I may as well be getting paid for it – the thought of teaching classes terrified me!

In 1999 I bit the bullet and did my training to become a group fitness (aerobics as we used to call it!) instructor.  Eventually I resigned from the bank and committed to a full time gym instructing course so that I could start working in a gym as a career.  My friends and family thought I was crazy but I knew that the only place where I felt good about myself was at the gym.  I decided that money was not the most important thing in life and that being happy and enjoying every day was.

After working in nearly every gym in the city and being promoted quickly (funny what you can achieve when you are passionate and driven) I decided to move to Australia with my partner to seize whatever new opportunities came up.

Opportunities in fitness education opened up and I was able to share my experience and passion for fitness with other like minded people.

Managing a fitness centre had always been a major long term goal and I had put this onto the back burner so in 2007 when I was offered the opportunity at managing a facility with 1800 members I jumped at the chance.  This was a 9 month journey of learning and growing as a person and being able to put an amazing team of fitness professionals around me.

I now find myself back in the education side of the industry.  Being able to share my knowledge and experiences with our students in a fun and exciting way is a challenge that I embrace daily.

I am passionate about:

  1. Women strength training
  2. Australians having a healthier quality of life
  3. everyone living the life that they deserve and enjoying the moment
  4. Customer Service
