We at Onfit Training College want nothing more than to see our students achieve their goals of completing their course and starting a successful and rewarding career in the fitness industry.

We realise that sometimes it is challenging to complete the course via distance education with all the distractions and commitments that every day life throws at you. Sometimes it is hard to find time to dedicate to your studies no matter how hard you try!

We would like to help our students find this time and offer any current distance students the chance to upgrade their online or correspondence course to classroom study. This will allow a dedicated time each week for a student to spend on their course and they will have all the benefits from classroom learning such as time with a teacher, the ability to ask questions and receive feedback, practical demonstrations, motivation to keep studying and best of all – no distractions!

We are offering 2 FREE upgrades to the Certificate III classes starting on Monday (29th March) at the Brisbane and Gold Coast campuses. Both full time and part time options are available to help fit around today’s busy schedules.

To win your chance to upgrade your course for FREE simply email admin@onfit.com.au and tell us why you think the classroom option will better help you complete your studies. The 2 best answers we receive will have their course enrolment upgraded for FREE and a place reserved for them in one of the classes starting on March 29th.

We look forward to hearing from you and remember that we are always here to help you with any questions you have or assistance you may need!

Yours in Health and Fitness,

The team at Onfit Training College

Having worked in the fitness industry for the previous 10 years and with my current role as Careers Advisor for Online Fitness, I often get asked by people – What should I look for in a Personal Trainer?  After doing a quick survey around the office, we have come up with the top 3 aspects to look for when thinking of working with a Personal Trainer.

  1. Qualifications- always check to see that your trainer has the appropriate qualifications, registration and insurance to be training you.  This will give you the peace of mind you need to focus on your training and achieve your results.  Ask around at a few gyms/studios to find out which Training Providers are being recommended and which ones to avoid.  You will always find Online Fitness being recommended.
  2. Experience- what sort of experience does your trainer have?  Ideally you should be looking for the experience that your trainer has had working with clients that have had similar goals to yourself as you are the one wanting to achieve the results.  What sort of life experience have they had? You’ll be spending a fair amount of time with them!  If you have any physical or medical issues that limit your training, make certain that your trainer has had experience working with these issues.
  3. Personality- make certain that you are comfortable with your trainer.  You will be sharing personal and sensitive information with your trainer so the need for comfortability is paramount.  Also, you need to enjoy training with them and look forward to spending time with them.  It’s easier to do this with someone you like.

There are plenty of other aspects to look at when finding a Personal Trainer such as client results, nutrition advice, their ability to look the part, training specialisations and the list can go on.  Essentially what it comes down to is what is it that you are looking for?  Make sure you have this set in your mind before you start your Personal Training journey.  Begin with the end in mind.

A story of hows

Often in the fitness industry, a new trainer or a student will ask me “how do I get into the fitness industry?” Is it a  “what you know” or a “who you know” type of industry?

Hopefully this helps shed some light on this question.

When I was attempting to get into the industry (many moons ago now) I was finding that personal training jobs were hard to come by. After all, I was a 20 year old kid, straight out of university, with zero work experience, and personal training was something only celebrities could afford. It had not yet become mainstream for the everyday Jo gym-goer.  It was those few words that kept coming back to ‘haunt’ me “zero work experience!” So whilst a lot of other graduates from my degree (Human Movements) were seeking employment in different fields, I was determined to make it in the fitness industry.

After yet another rejection, I thought best to fight fire with fire and I approached a small, family operated gym and offered to work for free. I figured that if they would not pay me for the experience, I would pay myself. Funnily enough, the gym agreed and I was officially an (unpaid ) staff member. I figured I was getting a free gym membership, so my annual salary was approx $1K.  Every Tuesday and Thursday night I would work in this gym, and do all the tasks of a personal trainer, without the pay at the end of it.

About 4 months went by and out of the blue, the manager called me into the office. I wasn’t sure why, I figured they could not fire me if they were not paying me, so I was a little curious. What he said next was probably what forged my career: “We notice you have come in every week, without pay, and without a moan or problem. You have never once asked for money and have showed you love this place. The qualities you have cannot be taught and you are exactly what we are looking for to move this gym forward.” With that he offered me the Gym Managers position. I had gone from volunteer to manager overnight, and you could not wipe the smile off my face.

During the next decade I was very blessed, working for some of the biggest gym brands in the world and running a very profitable and successful personal training business.

I guess I could go on with more detail, but that is for a later date. These days personal training jobs are a bit easier to come by, however, if (like me) you feel experience may be your downfall, don’t be afraid to put your hand up for some volunteer work. Who knows, it may just pay off for you like it did for me!!!

Until then, keep training hard!

Jeffrey

STUDY ONLINE

Not all students can sit in a classroom and fully grasp the information and concepts presented.  As the saying goes:  “The brain can only take in what the seat can endure.”

As an online student you can fully focus on the material in front of you and spend as long as you need to absorb the information. The materials are presented with lessons containing slide presentations, voice overs, side notes, quizzes, and online interactive assessments that are marked instantly!

Delivery of the modules in this fashion prevents you from being overwhelmed by information overload, and lets you progress at your own pace.

STUDY ONLINE + HARD COPY MATERIALS

Do you like to scribble your own notes, and circle key points on paper to make your study more effective? Then having the hard copy of resources will definitely work for you.

All the benefits of online study are coupled with this additional layer of ‘concrete’ information you can take with you anywhere. You will receive a full set of resources – separate booklets for every unit, and a fabulous anatomy revision book. You will also receive a text book which you will find invaluable for years to come!

BLENDED LEARNING

(The Online Course + Classroom learning)

Combine the Online Fitness Course with a weekly classroom session and you have our brand new style of blended learning. You have online access to all resources, and will be able to work toward your qualifications at your own pace.  Not only are the resources online, all of your assessments are too with you receiving your results within a couple of minutes of completion.

Add our Saturday morning tutorials and you have a fantastic way to keep you motivated and on-track with your studies. In these sessions, you will have the ability to:

  • Ask any questions you have regarding the information in the course
  • Learn further information from your educator and your peers
  • Participate in practical workshops
  • Learn what is happening in the industry

CORRESPONDENCE

If you don’t have access to a computer we can still provide you with your course materials in the traditional ‘see and feel’ hard copy resources. You can begin whenever you like and enjoy the support from teachers and staff throughout your learning.

Your Questions Answered…

We get a lot of questions from our fabulous current and potential trainees! While this is by no means a comprehensive list, we have compiled the most asked ones for you!

If you are thinking of beginning your education - take some time to read up on the most common  queries we have experienced on training for the fitness industry!

(1)    I have not studied for years – will I be able to cope?

Absolutely! Many students feel like this when they start, but the course is easy to understand and fun to work through.

You can study at home or on campus and relax knowing that you also have a passionate team of supporters ready to help with any hiccups along the way.

(2)    I want to do the course from home – but how much time do I need to invest?

Our courses are designed to fit in with busy lives! Whether you have a few nights or just a few hours a week, you can work through the course at a pace that fits with your lifestyle.

(3)    I want to try studying by myself, but can I move to classroom courses if I change my mind once I have already started?

Yes, of course! We offer our courses online, face to face (full timeor part time) and even blended!  Whatever way you learn best, we’ll have the solution for you.

(4)    What is blended learning?

Glad you asked! Our blended course is the best of both worlds. You study your theory online, but meet once a week for a tutorial and practical session on campus. This allows you to take minimum time out of your busy life, but still gain the practical skills needed with the support of a teacher. Touching base once a week helps you stay on track and experience the benefits of still working with a group of other passionate people.

(5)    Do I have to pay for my course up front?

No. We understand that not everybody can afford to pay in full. You can invest in your career by paying upfront with great savings, or take advantage of our interest free payment plan options.

(6)    Are the courses nationally recognised?

Yes, yes, yes. The courses you study with Online Fitness are delivered in partnership with The WISE Academy. This means all courses are nationally recognised. But wait…There’s more!  Australian qualifications are respected around the world, so even if you travel, your qualifications with us will open doors for you.

(7)    Will I feel confident enough to start working straight away?

Yes! We pride ourselves on producing ‘industry ready’ graduates. As a student you will learn to put your knowledge into practice when you undertake the work placement component of our course. This is an essential part of our program. Here you not only practice your skills and gain confidence, you also gain real life experience of how the industry works.

(8)    Are there many job opportunities?

There certainly are! With the stresses and challenges people are facing now, health and well being is being valued more than ever. This means ‘Personal Trainers Trained Properly’ are very much in demand!

A high percentage of our students are offered jobs while they complete their work experience, so you can feel very confident about the opportunities our courses will present.

What are your qualifications?

I studied at Deakin University, Burwood, Vic, completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) and Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).

What did you do before Online Fitness?

After graduating from University in 2002, I went on to teaching, Physical Education, Health Education and Outdoor Education for 5 years at an all girls’ school in Melbourne. Every year I took on new challenges, coaching new sporting teams, organising camps and motivating students to continue enjoying their health and fitness.

Why did you decide to start teaching?

Since my first year of high school I wanted to work in the Health and Fitness industry.  I loved Physical Education and any type of sport as a child and wanted to continue my adult life/career in that area.  My year 7 PE teacher was a role model for me and increased my interest and inspiration in Health and Fitness.  My sister also completed a Human Movement degree and love every minute of it, so I decided to have the best of both worlds and do a dual degree in both areas.

After teaching high school students for 5 years, I needed a new challenge and that’s when I moved into teaching adults.

Why did you choose Online Fitness?

It was actually purely by chance that I came to work with Online Fitness.  My partner is a Brisbane boy and we were living in Melbourne where I was born and raised. He was offered a job opportunity in Brisbane so we decided to make the move. Like I said, I felt I needed a new challenge so instead of looking for high school teaching I was looking for any job in the fitness industry.  That is when I came across Online Fitness.  I was interviewed over the phone and was employed in December before moving up in January.  It was such an exciting time, moving to a new state and moving into a new career.  I have loved every moment at Online Fitness!

What is your role?

I first started as delivering the Cert IV part time class.  I then moved into a full time position delivering the Cert III and IV course.  I now oversee all of cert III correspondence, marking, curriculum etc. I have been involved in the producing and developing of our new online product.  I am also the graphic designer for the company (just something I do in my spare time!).

What do you enjoy most about Online Fitness?

Moving to a new state and job has been the hardest thing I have had to do. Leaving all my family and friends was very daunting but the team at Online Fitness have been outstanding! They have made me feel so welcome and a part of the family.  I would not want to work anywhere else.  I also love the fact that we as a company are making a difference in the Fitness industry, not only enhancing our students’/trainers’ knowledge, but providing highly educated personal trainers for the community.

  • For every 50 hours of work you complete, Fitness Aust will grant you 1 CEC point.  A maximum of 6 CEC points can be attained from working in the Fitness industry for re-registration.
  • 80% of premature deaths can be prevented through healthy diet, regular physical activity and not using tobacco
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 180 million people worldwide have diabetes.  This number is likely to more than double by 2030.
  • The human body is a machine that works efficiently by using negative feedback loops.
  • In the Middle Ages, sugar was a treasured luxury costing 9 times as much as milk.
  • An onion, an apple and potato all have the same taste, the differences in flavour are caused by their smell.
